APX News / NEW HIRE! KARYN BYE
APX Hockey is honored to announce the addition of Karyn Bye to OUR team as the new Director of Girls Hockey.
“She’s been insanely successful in women’s hockey and I think her accolades speak for themselves,” said APX General Manager Erik Rasmussen about the hire. “She has basically accomplished everything and she’s still very passionate about growing the game and it’ll be a fantastic opportunity for us to have her mentoring and building this program for the girls.”

Bye brings a wealth of experience to the APX team. She originally started playing hockey in her hometown of River Falls, Wisconsin, which eventually led her to the Division I level at the University of New Hampshire. She propelled the Wildcats to two ECAC championships and scored a whopping 164 points in just 87 games which earned her a spot in the UNH Hall of Fame.
The Wisconsin native also had a long and storied career for Team USA. She participated in six different Women’s World Championships, earning six silver medals, and participated in both the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, and the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, winning a gold and silver medal, respectively. During the 1998 tournament, the U.S. won the first-ever gold medal awarded in women’s ice hockey with Bye as its leading goalscorer and as an alternate captain. In addition to that, she was a two-time USA Hockey Bob Allen Women’s Player of the Year in 1995 and 1998, she was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2011 and eventually into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame back in 2014.
“I’ve known about this impressive program for decades, and I’ve seen the success they’ve had and the players that come out of here,” said Bye about APX. “I’m super excited to jump on board and build the girls program to be just as successful as the boys program.”
The 54-year-old has also had plenty of coaching experience in the past from youth hockey and high school hockey in Hudson to recently becoming an assistant coach for the Stillwater girls high school team. As the new Girls Director at APX, Bye will be on the ice and in the weight room with the skaters in the program and will be a mentor and a role model to these promising young athletes as well.
“When I talked to Joel Owens [the CEO of APX Hockey] about this role and the overall company mission, I felt his passion and strong desire to make a difference in the lives of others which reflects my same beliefs," she added. “It’s not just about developing the player on the ice but developing the person off the ice too. The goal is to develop these girls and help them on their journey through hockey and life.”
Bye has a passion for giving back to the sport of hockey and growing the game and is excited to get started in her new position with the APX team.
